  • Amniocentesis
    • An obstetric procedure done for a variety of indications.
    • Involves the placement of a needle into the uterus under ultrasound guidance so that amniotic fluid may be drawn off.
    • Most commonly done for prenatal diagnostic purposes during the second trimester. Carries a 1/200 risk of pregnancy loss when done at that time.
  • Antepartum testing
    • Term used to describe testing done during the course of a pregnancy to confirm the survivability of a fetus in utero. There are a number of different ways to conduct this testing. The easiest test is a nonstress test. There are also ultrasound guided exams evaluating different biophysical parameters such as the amount of amniotic fluid, the amount and type of movement as well as ultrasound tests evaluating the flow of blood in the fetal umbilical arteries.
    • These tests are routinely ordered in patients with high risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension and growth restriction.
